LI-YU, Julie T.

Assoc. Prof Julie Li-Yu, MD, received her degree in B.Sc. Medical Technology under the College of Pharmacy from the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Íø in 1985 and Doctor of Medicine in the same institution in 1990. She underwent residency training in Internal Medicine at the Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center in 1996 and finished fellowship training in Adult Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology at UST Hospital in 1999. After the fellowship, she went for a clinical research fellowship in 2000 on Gout and other crystal-associated arthritis at the University of Pennsylvania, USA, under Prof H. Ralph Schumacher through a grant from the Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology. After her return from UPenn, she joined the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in 2001. She pursued a Master of Science in Public Health major in Biostatistics from the University of the Philippines Manila College of Public Health in 2006. She will be the Vice-Chair of the Asia Pacific Regional Panel of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry from 2023 to 2026. Her primary research interests are osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases, synovial crystal-associated arthropathies, and systemic lupus erythematosus, among other topics. She was conferred the Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) Exemplar in Clinical Research in 2014. She is the overall lead and convenor of the 2023 Philippine Clinical Practice Guidelines on osteoporosis among postmenopausal women and older men, which were approved and uploaded to the DOH-approved Clinical Practice Guidelines compendium.Ìý

Research Highlights

  • She is actively involved in national (OSPFI, PRA, PCP, FNRI) and international organizations (APLAR, AFOS, ISCD, APCO), with primary aim of strengthening ties and collaborating with colleagues in research works and projects focusing on crystal-associated arthropathies especially gouty arthritis and metabolic bone disease inclosteoporosis and sarcopenia. She is the author of Chapter 25.3 Metabolic Disorders of the Bone – Osteoporosis and co-author of Chapter 25.4 Autoimmune Conditions – Rheumatoid Arthritis – in the recently launched 1st edition of the Philippine College of Physicians Textbook of Internal Medicine. She just finished leading the 2023 Osteoporosis clinical practice guidelines (CPG) taskforce members in finalizing the manuscript that was approved and endorsed on January 2024 by the National Practice Guidelines Program Secretariat as one of the DOH-approved CPG under the Universal Health Care Law. She is currently working on establishing normative database on trabecular bone score among generally healthy Filipino males and females. TBS is an analytical tool that captures trabecular microarchitecture in greater details than the standard lumbar spinebone mineral density (BMD). This tool will be used to complement results generated in the standard BMD results in the adult population. She is also part of the technical working group that laid the ground works on the 2024 hyperuricemia and gout CPG.
